The recording of the latent image on the drum is achieved by the use of a number of recording modules (10 modules in earlier devices) mounted in parallel across the drum length. Altogether, these modules permit the recording of full width micro-lines of dots (3336 dots in 240 dots-per-inch earlier machines).
With third generation printer products, a higher density 480-dpi module was introduced (1997). While earlier modules relied on micro-mechanical manufacturing processes, the new HD module took full advantage of the batch processes offered by Silicon-based micro-electronics. Recording bars made of 18 HD modules offered capability for the printing of 8640-dot micro lines.
A very high density 600-dpi version was developed using similar technology and is currently used in fourth generation products (years 2000+).
